4/5/14 Is Wind Power Really Clean
Coal and oil are the scourge of the planet, but have you considered what it takes to make the wind generators. The super magnets that are required to generate power are not made from candy canes. China has been the main source of the material that is required to make neodymium magnets. The process that is required to make super magnets leaves a very toxic residue, that is causing great concern. “There’s not one step of the rare earth mining process that is not disastrous for the environment,” Jamie Choi, an expert on toxics for Greenpeace China, told the Mail. “Ores are being extracted by pumping acid into the ground, and they are processed using more acid and chemicals.” The people who live near the waste lakes wear masks when they go out. Crops will not grow anywhere near the lakes. Radiation is ten times higher near the manufacturing facility than in the surrounding country side.
There are companies that are starting to mine the material in the United States and in Australia.
Have you noticed that there is always an undesirable aspect of every thing that looks so great at first glance. Could it be that the process to generate wind powered electricity will do more harm to the environment than coal. It is a crime to kill an eagle, but the wind generators are killing birds of all kinds. If the oil and gas industry kills a bird they are hauled into court and fined, if birds and bats get killed by a wind farm the government has no problem. Preliminary research suggest that turbines could potentially effect regional weather and rainfall patterns. Have you noticed that the drought conditions are worse west of interstate 35 ? The big wind farms are located in west Texas. “Just a thought”
There is a fly in every ointment, when you kill all the birds and bats you can get out the fly swatter and DDT to get rid of the mosquitoes and other pests that are kept under control by our winged friends. We could go back to the days of the horse and buggy, but you would have to watch where you were stepping and hold your nose. Maybe you would like to lower you perishable food into a hand dug well to keep it cool.
You have nuclear waste problems, you have problems with waste products from making magnets for wind turbines, coal presents problems, so I guess we will need to make up our minds which kind of poison we like best, because there is not a problem free solution. Without subsidies wind generated power would be the most expensive , so I recommend not closing any coal or gas fired power plants, if you are concerned about cost.
